about

The first section evolved from a semi-improvised film
soundtrack that DSCM performed live at Bristol's legendary independent kino at 20th Century Flicks. The film was 'The Pit' (1962) directed by Edward Abraham, a claustrophobic and highly atmospheric adaptation
of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum". The film's original
soundtrack was created by the Radiophonic Workshop, and the aim was
to evoke something of that tactile 'found sound' and analogue aesthetic, while infusing
it with a growing sense of entrapment and panic through increasing tactile and spatial sensory impact.

The second section, Dissolved in Ashes, has its roots in the Dies
Irae (Day of Wrath) medieval Latin poem, the melody dates back to
Gregorian chant, or older. The first line of the melody is one of the most quoted in musical literature, appearing in the works of many composers. Its lyrics describe the Last Judgement and is best known from its use in the Roman Rite
Requiem (Mass for the Dead or Funeral Mass). Here it serves as an impassioned warning lest 'the creature' may 'rise again'.

lyrics

Dies Irae, dies illa
The day of wrath, oh on that day
Will dissolve the world in ashes

Death and nature, they will marvel
Oh when the creature will rise again
The guilty judged, oh spare them God

Lacrimosa dies illa (tearful will be that day)
On which from these embers I rise again
My heart crushed in ashes

Pie Iesu Domine
Oh, merciful Jesus
Grant them rest

Lyrics: traditional / sacred / DSCM
