Idumea 05:57
And am I born to die? To lay this body down And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown? A land of deepest shade Unpierced by human thought The dreary regions of the dead Where all things are forgot Soon as from earth I go What will become of me? Eternal happiness of woe Must then my portion be Waked by the trumpet sound I from my grave shall rise And see the judge with glory crowned And see the flaming skies

O deathe, o deathe rock me asleepe Bring me to quiet rest Let pass my wearye guiltless ghost Out of my woefull breast Toll on thy passing bell Ring out thy dolefull knell Let the sound my deathe tell For I must die, there is no remedye Die, for now I die, I die I die

about

On an unseasonably cold and windy July night, the shop floor at Black City records in Bristol was cleared, amps and drum kit set up, incense and candles were lit, and the lights were dimmed.

In this intimate atmosphere, Dead Space Chamber Music played a special set which can now be released as the first of the Black City Sessions.

About the tracks:
1 Y Dref Wen (The Shining Town)*
Based around a set of traditional Welsh song lyrics
2 Mari Lwyd / Morfa’r Frenhines (Grey Mare / Queens Marsh)
A combination of two traditional Welsh melodies, the Mari Lwyd wassailing song, and a tune commonly played on the harp
3 Bryd One Brere (Bird on a Briar)
Reinterpretation of the earliest surviving English secular love song (c1290-1320) with lyrics in Middle English
4 Idumea
Arrangement of a hymn frequently sung in the shapenote tradition, a form of a cappella sacred choral singing which began in America in the early 19th century, with roots going back to Gregorian chant
5 O Deathe Rock Me Asleepe
Reinterpretation of a lute poem attributed to Anne Boleyn (1501-1536), and said to have been written when she was being held in the Bloody Tower

"We are an early music group from Bristol, UK. We reinterpret historical material, especially from the medieval & renaissance periods, and we combine this with traditional, improvised heavy & atmospheric music influences.

We first encountered the good folks at Black City Records through the Dark Alchemy music events that we curate, together with Tommy Creep, in churches and crypts in Bristol. We heard about their plans to open a metal record shop as a whisper over a pint at the legendary Gryphon heavy metal pub. What grew from that whisper is now half of the #bristolmetalquarter, and just seconds away from the Gryph. We were honoured when they asked us to be the first band to sign the legendary Black City Girder prior to its opening, and we have been (very!) regular visitors of the shop ever since. In a short time it has become an important place to many people - a place that brings the community together, and a place where we feel at home. Its an authentic place, with good people and good music at its heart. Long live Black City Records."

- Dead Space Chamber Music

"We first heard Dead Space Chamber Music not long after moving to Bristol, prior to their Dark Alchemy II event at the Church of St Thomas the Martyr, whilst researching the dark ambient scene in the city. As taken as we were with the dark ethereal sounds they were making, seeing them live in the flesh was an altogether more intense experience where they created a sombre yet joyous, dark yet illuminating and organic yet spiritual journey for the crowd.

From that gig forward we made every effort to see them when we could, and we are very lucky to now class them as very dear friends. They have been regulars at the shop since (before) we opened and it was a pleasure to welcome them to perform a special set for us on a blustery night in July. We hope you enjoy their session, now committed to CD, as much as we do."
